This first novel is begrudgkng good one. And as long as the marriage remains unconsummated, she can annul it and return to England in a year when the ship returns. There is a bit of interaction with the native inhabitants, and Drew is highly conscious of the fact that many of the conflicts have been the white settlers’ fault, either through taking land that wasn’t theirs to take or directly causing violence by killing an “Indian” – still, the idea of giving it all back and moving on mpst occurs to them, unsurprisingly.

Yet I’ve never had much interest in reading about the white colony in America, beyond the fantastic book What is America? I’m pretty sure that never would have been allowed. In the end I was invested enough to finish the book, even through my annoyances and eye rolls so it earns a star for that. What a lovely book. The unexpectedness of it was that the English thought the Indians were friendly We become attached to Constance because of her passionate nature and mind, which is so similar to the modern-day audience reading the novel; we want her to succeed in her new environment because if she can, than perhaps we beegrudging have too.


Just a bit, though. I felt that all else took side issue to their sexual tension, and that bothered me. The author gives details of how the colonists eat, what the homes looked like and how they grew tobacco. The writing style was nice. See 1 question about A Bride Most Begrudging…. I read the whole thing, but ,ost by skimming most of the second half and rolling my eyes a lot.

Constance refers to Drew as “this O’Connor person” — That doesn’t sound like 17th century language, does it? In a few words it is clean mozt romantic fiction.
