Notes from NOLA: Part Nine – Snake & Jakes

I can almost hear you thinking “You’re joking, right?”

I kind of thought the same thing last weekend when a friend and I rode out here.

“I wanted one of New Orleans’ best bars” I laughed. “Why are we at this shack?”

Turns out, this shack might be one of the best kept secrets in town.

Welcome to Snake & Jakes Christmas Lounge.

Serving an eclectic crowd for more than 20 years, with more history/fabricated history surrounding it than more of the buildings in the neighborhood. Formerly a complete secret until two fellas started being seen there.

Anthony Bourdain. And George Clooney.

Bourdain famously called it a “UNESCO World Heritage site” and has, one more than one occasion, subtly dropped it in interviews.

Clooney has said nothing, but he doesn’t have to say anything because he’s George Clooney.

Back to Snake & Jakes. It’s, well… it’s always Christmas inside, for one. The bar hands out sunglasses, due to the fact that time stops inside, for two. Cocktails are $3. And this was the bar you might have seen on the news during Katrina. The bar who famously wrote out “NEED ICE!!!” on top of their roof for the FEMA helicopters flying by.

Is it nice? No. Fancy? Ha.

A gem? Absolutely.

So take a slice of this for your own Gallery, and throw in a few secrets from your own city!

And if you need me, I’ll be waiting on GC and Tony [that’s what their friends call them] at the bar.
